For the first time in 38 years, the United States wins a gold medal in ice dancing at the SOCHI 2014 Winter Olympic Games. Meryl Davis,Charlie White ranked up with the highest scores of the free dance event by skating as the Sultan and Scheherazade to win the gold. The two captivated the judges and earned 116.63 points to the Canadians’ 114.66. The duo lured judges by performing difficult skills such as their “twizzles,” which are tight traveling spins over the ice.
“That in itself justified 17 years of hard work,” White said about their performance.
“We have grown up in every sense of the word,” Davis said of the teamwork that took them to the winning score.
The event became an Olympic sport at the 1976 Winter Olympic Games where Eastern European teams dominated the spotlight. Virtue and Moir where Eastern European teams dominated the spotlight. Virtue and Moir were the first North American team to win a gold medal in 2010 in Vancouver. This is Team USA’s fourth medal in the event.
