The Jewelers' Security Alliance is asking jewelers to be wary of callers pretending to be from their alarm company after an incident in a store in Pennsylvania.According to JSA vice president Bob Frank, in early January, employees of a chain store received several phone calls from someone who claimed to be an employee of the store's alarm company. >>>

In investment play, the ice fad cometh

By JAMES COVERT               NEW YORK POST                January 19, 2012

Diamonds are a girl's best friend - and they may be her best investment, too. With polished-diamond prices overall up 19 percent last year, some wholesalers have begun polishing up their pitches that the pink, yellow, and blue varieties - which are far more rare - will make for good investments. >>>

Kill'em with kindness

By Whitney Sielaff                           National Jeweler                         January 19, 2012

Eons ago, when I was working my way through college in the service industry, management taught us a golden rule: "Kill them with kindness." In other words, treat the customer with such respect and such a high level of service that they can't help but be won over to your side. Easy to say. Harder to do. >>>

5 Lessons Small Business Can Learn from Big Business

By Guest Author                             Business.com                         January 20, 2012

Having worked with businesses of all sizes, I've seen tactics work as often as I've seen them fail. Big businesses and corporations have usually grown to their current stature because of intelligent decision-making, endurance, and a willingness to think outside the box.  Small businesses may have more modest budgets and markets, but they can still learn a lot from their larger comrades.>>>

The Debate on Online Jewelers

By Daniel Ford                   JCK                January 21, 2012

When Blue Nile's CEO resigned after the company's disappointing third-quarter profit numbers this past November, JCK senior editor Rob Bates posed the question: "Should Blue Nile Have the Blues?" As someone who is still learning the ins and outs of the industry, I looked back on these stories and started thinking about what impact online jewelers have had in the jewelry business, and what role will they serve in the future.>>>

Jewelers Grading Their Own Diamonds: A Good Thing?

By Rob Bates                                            JCK                               January 20, 2012

An article from two weeks back, "Why Jewelers Are Doing Their Own Diamond Grading," drew a large number of comments (30!), some supportive, some horrified. This trend is, of course, not new: De Beers' Forevermark has its own lab, and Tiffany has graded its own diamonds for years. In 1999, I wrote an article on this topic called "Going Cert-Less." Looking back, one quote really struck a chord with me: >>>

5 reasons employees aren't sharing their ideas

By Suzanne Lucas                          CBS Money Watch                     January 23, 2012

work for a great company! We have a culture that we've worked hard to establish and continuously improve .... we have an extremely low turnover rate and, for the most part, great feedback scores from our employees. Unfortunately, one of the things we seem to have an area of opportunity on is "employees feeling comfortable providing their opinion." What could be behind this? How can we ensure that employees feel that they can talk with us? >>>

Gold & silver exchanges, coin shops, jewelry stores, and pawn shops are bustling with customers. Even check-cashing centers, payday loan businesses, and barber shops are getting in on the action. >>>
