The disparit
y between retail prices of jewelry and wholesale jewelry prices swelled in September, according to the latest inflation data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. - Retail prices of jewelry declined by nearly 2 percent in September, when compared with retail prices in August. - Wholesale jewelry prices, in contrast, rose by over 2 percent in September, when compared with wholesales jewelry prices in August.

De Beers, supplier of about a third of the world's rough diamonds, said prices of the gems may "stick" at current levels after demand from India and China spurred a rally of more than 35 percent this year. Rising wealth in the two countries is enabling consumers to buy more diamond jewelry, compensating for slower growth in the U.S., the biggest retail-gem market.

Gem Diamonds has sold the Letseng Star, a 550 carat, Type IIa, D color, white gem diamond recovered on August 19, 2011 at the company's Letseng mine in the Kingdom of Lesotho, for $16.5 million.The Letseng Star is currently ranked as the 14th largest white diamond on record and is the fourth diamond of such historical significance to be recovered at Letseng since 2006. >>>

Report: Jewelers must adapt to changing market

Jewelers looking to survive in today's challenging retail environment need to expand their definition of fine jewelry and be open to using new marketing channels, the findings of the latest study from Unity Marketing
suggests. Last month, Unity Marketing released the Jewelry Report 2011, a report based upon a consumer survey conducted on March 30 and April 1 of 553 recent jewelry buyers, identified from a statistically representative sample of 1,055 U.S. households. >>>
