We spent this past weekend in Chicago at In-Store's Smart show.... which rocked by the way... This was the third year for the show and it just keeps getting better.

Shane Decker moderated a symposium, with GemFind president Alex Fetanat as a speaker, on the topic of virtual diamond inventories, and 2 points were made crystal clear to all in attendance:

(1) diamond search and ring builder tools are the number one interactive tools for engaging customers browsing your website -- these tools, which give your customers a huge selection of diamonds and rings to view and configure, are essential since bridal sales are typically 40%+ of a retail jewelers' overall business ... it's not so much about selling diamond online as it is about using these tools to drive customers into store and to help close in-store sales when you don't have the 1.56 E VS1 in the showcase; and

(2) before a retailer jewelers invests in an integrated diamond search and ring builder tool, he should take a good look at his website and decide if it's a good reflection of the store... if it's not.. the online shopper won't bother using the tools.

It is a fact that over 80% of all shoppers go online before going into your store -- generation Y bridal shoppers go online like their parents went to the yellow pages... and if they don't like your website, they'll be looking for your competitors in less than 1 minute.  Your website's look is more important than ever... it's more important than all the tools we sell because it doesn't make sense to add our great technology if your website has not been updated in 5+ years.

Auction Action: Historic Diamond and Emerald for Sale

By Stonechicky           The Israeli Diamond Industry Blog              March 31, 2011

Advocates of sustainable jewelry scoff at the idea of buying "new" diamonds. All natural diamonds and gemstones, they argue, are formed over the course of millions of years, long before people appeared on the scene to pry them out of the earth and show them off at high-society events. >>>

Making cuts!

By Brad Huisken                              Southern Jewelry News

With the economic conditions that exist today, I keep hearing jewelers talking about making cuts in order to maintain profit. I agree you must make some cuts today in order to maintain a profitable company. However, a cut in the wrong place can kill your business. Let me caution you - Do not cut your lifeline or your training budget. Your salespeople are, without question, the most valuable asset that you have.>>>

It's Time for Print Pubs to End the Free Online Lunch

By Sidney Hill
        E-Commerce Times                      April 01, 2011

It's difficult to find an industry that has had a harder time transitioning to the digital age than the print news media. It also would be tough to find an industry that inflicted so much damage on itself by making a single bad decision. Art Deco Jewelry

By Carly Wickell
                                        About.com

Art Deco is a style that emerged in 1925, a result of exhibits at the World's Fair held in Paris, France. The term Art Deco is a shortened form of the event's name: Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts). Art Deco remained popular until about the mid 1930s, and gained a new following in the 1980s forward.>>>
