Jewelry With Stories to Tell

By SUZY MENKES                  The New York Times                     July 12, 2010

PARIS - You don't need 3-D glasses for the sculpted shapes to stand out and the colors to pop. But the high jewelry that had an open day during last week's haute couture season is finely tuned to the latest fashion. Whether it is a balloon dangling from a necklace as part of a Jules Verne inspiration at Van Cleef & Arpels or the voluptuous and brightly colored Bollywood influences at Dior, the haute joaillerie told its stories in an almost cinematic style.

Technicolor summer

By Catherine Dayrit                     National Jeweler                 July 12, 2010

This summer's cacophonous prints and bohemian-inspired apparel are a siren call for jewelry that can stand out. Look for colors that pop or designs featuring a variety of textures, from wood and leather to lucite and embellished metals. In necklaces, trend-watchers will look for brightly hued statement necklaces sitting right atop strong prints, long swinging pendants and collar styles cropped close to the neck. >>>

Explore the Art of Polymer Clay

By Karla Rosenbusch                 Jewelry Making Daily              July 09, 2010

Most jewelry makers I know love to try out different media and techniques to expand and increase their skills. I recently decided almost on a whim to experiment with polymer clay. Fortunately, I didn't have to look any further than my own living room wall for inspiration. My father was an extremely talented fine artist--a skill I did not inherit but which I can definitely appreciate.

National Jeweler                                       July 09 2010

Purchase, N.Y.--Jewelry sales grew a "very respectable" 10.1 percent in June, marking eight consecutive months of growth for the category, MasterCard Advisors' latest SpendingPulse report shows. More broadly, for all categories, however, June continued the trend of slow to modest growth, according to the report, which tracks national retail and service sales within the MasterCard payments network. E-commerce sales were an exception, increasing 9.7 percent across all categories in June. Online sales were strongest for the jewelry category and at department stores.  >>>

Celebrity Jewelry Watching at the Cannes Film Festival

By Carly Wickell,                                                   About.com Guide

The annual Festival de Cannes, held each spring in France, has missed only two years since its 1946 launch. Cannes is an invitation-only festival where new films are screened over an almost two-week period, followed by awards presentations for many categories. Jewelry spotted at and around the festival stretches from casual to high-end, but nearly always reveals the latest trends. >>>

How to Protect Your Business Privacy

Business.com                                         July 06, 2010

For millions of small business owners, the lines between personal and business privacy are thin. You want your business to be famous, but that doesn't mean you want your personal finances to be public.  Nor do you want to be inundated with spam or junk mail. In a digital world where nothing that makes its way online ever disappears, protecting privacy is increasingly difficult.  >>>

Grow locally, source globally

By Jan Brassem                    National Jeweler                        July 09, 2010

Before the great recession, many jewelry managers relied on boom-time conditions--low interest rates, consumer confidence, high employment and the like--to drive customers into their stores. Now, with economic conditions improving, it appears that these same managers may already be singing Kumbayah: goodbye, recession--hello, happy days. >>>

Diamonds from Lip to Toe

By Roe Kalb                   The Israeli Diamond Industry Blog                   July 05, 2010

Before this year's World Cup began, it was a safe bet that few people outside South Africa had ever heard of a vuvuzela, let alone a gold-and-diamond-decked one. But a Russian businessman approached Austrian jeweler Klemens Pointner about gilding and bejeweling one of the long plastic horns for a business contact who'd come down with World Cup Fever.  Pointner told his client that while he could set the horn with as many diamonds as he wanted, there were few vuvuzelas to be had in Austria. >>>

The (social networking) world according to Gordon

By Michelle Graff                             National Jeweler                        July 05, 2010

Oklahoma City--Dan Gordon is a retail jeweler who also maintains a blog, controls two Facebook pages, manages a duo of feeds on Twitter and regularly visits sites that are foreign to social-media neophytes, including Blip.FM, Daily Booth, Foursquare, FriendFeed and Gowalla, among others. Feel intimidated by what one of the industry's most prolific social media experimenters is doing? Don't. >>>
