3 Ways to Thrive in a Retail Slowdown
When the economy starts sputtering that's when savvy retailers take action. Every newspaper, news program, news website is full of doom and gloom these days. Stores closings, foreclosures, rising gas prices, job cuts, rising food prices are all the top stories in the media. I have lived long enough to know that we have seen this all before. If you own a business, the question is, what changes can you make immediately to remain healthy during this period of "business sickness"? >>>

Leave precious coral where it belongs By Temple St. Clair National Jeweler July 02, 2010
class="MsoNormal" style='margin-bottom:7.5pt'>
Inspiration for jewelry and fashion design comes from many different places and influences, but perhaps no influence is as universal as the natural world around us. You see it in many pieces and lines from artists and producers the world over; nature is--in many ways--a natural fit in our industry. But each day, we are learning more about the impacts, both good and bad, that each of us has on the natural world--in the work that we do and in the products we support and create for our customers.

Marketing: Is jewelry a parallel universe?
By Ellen Fruchtman National Jeweler June 30, 2010
There are times when I feel as if I live in a parallel universe, especially in the jewelry industry. Here is a case in point: Retail giants Nordstrom and Target recently topped the American Consumer Satisfaction Index list, with news articles stating that the retailers continue to trounce their competition, despite the current economic downturn because their customers have the "will to spend." Is that any surprise? >>>

Congressman intros Internet sales tax bill
National Jeweler July 02, 2010
Washington--The National Retail Federation (NRF) is applauding introduction of federal legislation that would make it easier for states to require that online retailers and other out-of-state merchants collect sales tax just like brick-and-mortar stores. Traditional retailers were dealt a blow in 1992 when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Quill v. North Dakota that retailers are required to collect sales tax from out-of-state customers only if they have a physical presence, meaning a store, warehouse or office, in that customer's state. >>>

July's Gemstone - Ruby
Israeli Diamond Industry July 04, 2010
"Fashion a breastplate for making decisions - the work of a skilled craftsman. Make it like the ephod: of gold, and of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and of finely twisted linen. It is to be square - a span long and a span wide - and folded double. Then mount four rows of precious stones on it. In the first row there shall be a ruby, a topaz and a beryl; in the second row a turquoise, a sapphire and an emerald." (Exodus 28:15-18). >>>

Too, Too Much or Never Enough?
By Cynthia Sliwa JCK Magazine. June 28, 2010
The variety of desirable jewelry can seem overwhelming at times, and choosing among competing designs, a daunting task. Maybe that's part of the reason that, every so often, a style guide brings out this solution: Don't choose. Up the volume. Back in July 2008, for example, I noted in my July 27 blog post that the trend of piling on jewelry "has migrated from wrists to necks": >>>
