New York--In the hopes of leveling the playing field between Internet and brick-and-mortar retailers, Jewelers of America (JA) is urging Congress to reintroduce and pass the Sales Tax Fairness and Simplification Act. The legislation would give states nationwide the power, which they currently do not have, to require that remote sellers, including Internet retailers, collect and remit sales and use taxes. >>>

Jewelry Crime Up 17% in 2008

In a reversal of the trend from previous years, the total number of crimes against the jewelry industry increased 16.6 percent in 2008, the Jewelers' Security Alliance reported. Total dollar losses also increased to $103.5 million. "Crime was definitely up," says JSA president John Kennedy. But he notes there is no correlation historically between crime against the jewelry industry and bad economic times. >>>
