National Jeweler             November17, 2008

New York--The Jewelers Vigilance Committee (JVC) has released a new publication to provide the trade with a clear explanation of the legal standards that govern the manufacture, sale and advertising of gold and silver industry products."The Essential Guide to the U.S. Trade in Gold and Silver Jewelry" includes the JVC's interpretation of the National Gold and Silver Stamping Act, the Federal Trade Commission Guides for Jewelry, Precious Metal and Pewter, and the Voluntary Product Standard PS 68-76, which reflects the accepted trade practice in marking pieces made of silver in combination with gold.>>>

Antwerp Symposium: Industry Considering its Fate
By Edahn Golan, Antwerp          November 17,2008

Reduction in rough diamond supply, a ban on imports, a call to reduce VAT and even media coverage were discussed in the morning session of the Antwerp Symposium on Monday. Called as an emergency meeting, the symposium opened with a presentation by Chaim Even-Zohar who told the crowd that a 15 percent drop in sales in North America should be expected in the next 12 months. Sales in Japan and Europe are also expected to decrease, by 5 and 10 percent respectively.  >>>

Ready for the holiday marketing race?
By Ellen Fruchtman                  November 12, 2008

Chances are great that by now you have set up your media, creative and holiday events. But, have you paid attention to the details? Sure, you have beautiful product at a great value. Yet that's true for how many of your competitors? What you say, how you act and what you do are not only convincing your customer to buy from you right then and there--they have the single most impact on your business over the long run. Not radio or television, not print and not direct mail. >>>

Jewelry business faces meltdown

 Business & Technology                         November 15, 2008

"The economy is not helping anyone, but it's a little early to talk about what might happen in the jewelry industry," said Ron Ferrell of Ferrell Jewelers in DeLand. "It's tight because of the economy, but also the rise in gold prices." Demand for jewelry has waned as consumers put their income toward the high cost of food and fuel. A wobbly labor market and tighter credit also have Americans wondering how they're going to finance expensive purchases this holiday. >>>

Small Businesses: In Downturns, Invest in Public Relations
Suzanna de Baca -- Expert Business Source          November 13, 2008

In today's economy, businesses large and small are aggressively cutting costs. Companies are laying off valued workers, freezing salaries, slashing budgets, foregoing business travel, and canceling entertainment. But as you prune your budget, think strategically: one area you can't afford to trim is public relations.>>>

IDEX Online Research: Is There A Credible Polished Diamond Price List?

By Ken Gassman             November 13, 2008

Despite repeated attempts by a number of firms to create a credible, consistently reliable price list for polished diamonds, no one has gotten it quite right. Some are closer than others, but "perfection" hasn't been reached, yet. From a diamond trader's viewpoint - and from this analyst's viewpoint - there is simply not enough information to be able to gauge the diamond trading market as accurately as traders, analysts, buyers, and sellers can gauge similar markets for other commodities, equities, and real estate transactions. In a way, this comes as no surprise. After all, the diamond industry has been shrouded in secrecy for decades. Change - and transparency - come very slowly. >>>

Realities of Tough Economy Hit Home at Chicago's State Pawners & Jewelers
Market Watch
                               Nov. 17, 2008

When Scott Cohen, owner of State Pawners & Jewelers in Chicago, offered to help a recent customer, the last thing he expected was to see the man pull out his false teeth and ask for a loan in exchange. Cohen, who started working at his father's business in 1984, says that in his nearly 25 years of experience in this industry, he's never had anyone pawn something so sad, yet so odd. Turns out, the teeth were embedded with diamonds totaling over seven carats, worth $15,000. The customer needed money to pay for his daughter's college tuition and books.>>>

Should Blue Nile Marry Itself?
By Rick Aristotle Munarriz              11/12/2008

Here's a marriage match for your consideration: Should Blue Nile (Nasdaq: NILE) consider proposing to ... itself?
The engagement-ring specialist isn't talking about taking itself private, but at least that's the wishful thinking of co-founder and former vice president Ben Elowitz. He was a panel member at last night's Washington Technology Industry Association's annual predictions dinner. According to panel moderator John Cook from TechFlash, Elowitz was asked what company he would buy next year if he could take it in any direction. He chose Blue Nile. >>>

Identity Theft, Business Style
By Janet Arrowood       About.com

How to protect yourself from "phishers" and dumpster divers
The headlines are filled with cases of identity theft and fraud. Driver's license bureaus burgled, Social Security number lists sent to prison inmates, schools posting personal data on the Web, "phishing" and other computer-based attacks. Newspapers and magazines have shown-in painful detail-how victims struggle to untangle the mess left by identity thieves, reclaim their identities and reinstate their good credit. >>>

Retailer predicting upbeat season at her store
By Dave Alexander                 11/17/2008

Q: We've heard plenty of doom and gloom heading into this Christmas retail season. What's your assessment of the Muskegon retail market from the perspective of a local, independent jewelry store?

A: I think it is really going to treat us pretty well. We have a really good clientele. I hope to really stay positive about it.
Q: What has been the mood and attitude of your customers since the economic crisis hit in mid-September?
A: We have really not seen any kind of crisis come our way. Our business just gets better and better as we go.  >>>

Car Fires, Smoke Bombs Used in Burglaries

Jewelers Circular Keystone,      11/13/2008

The Jewelers' Security Alliance is reporting that a burglary ring in California is using vehicle fires and smoke bombs as diversions during the robbery of jewelry stores.
These events are being used to distract law enforcement while they rob jewelers, JSA said in its "Crime Alert" newsletter, issued Tursday. JSA reports three events, in the south San Francisco Bay area near the city of San Jose:>>>

Retailers Adjusting Return Policies
Jewelers Circular Keystone,            11/13/2008

As retailers get a handle on return fraud, many are softening return policies this holiday season as a way to provide good customer service, according to the National Retail Federation survey.
A total of 52 percent retailers of respondents to NRF's Return Fraud Survey said their holiday return policies will be more lenient than the policy for the rest of the year. This is up from 35 percent in 2007.
The third annual survey was completed by 82 retail loss prevention executives.>>>
