Georgia jewelry stores close amid robberies National Jeweler Aug. 25, 2008
A series of smash-and-grab robberies in one Atlanta-area mall has jewelry storeowners shuttering their doors, an Atlanta TV news station reports. According to a story posted on 11Alive.com, eight retail jewelers at Northlake Mall in DeKalb County kept their doors locked on Sunday, mostly to show solidarity with those that have been recently targeted by thieves. Some stores posted signs warning of lax security and the recent spree of smash-and-grab robberies that have plagued jewelry stores in this suburban mall. >>>

Gold may fall below $700; players eye US GDP data
By Mandar Nimkar, ECONOMICTIMES.COM 08/25/2008
Gold futures were down on Monday tracking the overseas markets, where a strong dollar and weak crude oil made investors pull out of precious metals. Gold fell to $821.05/823.05 an ounce from $827.00/828.60 late in New York on Friday, when it slipped more than $5 an ounce. Gold touched an all-time high of $1,023 an ounce in London on March 17, 2008, from where it began to ease. From $988 on July 15, it hit a low of $788 on August 15. After recovering some ground last week it again fell to $820 an ounce. >>>

Know - How Pieces of the Past: How do you know what an antique is?
By Dawn Waxon Aug 20, 2008
My career in the antiques industry has positioned me as a go-to gal with many an ingenuous inquiry regarding family heirlooms and hand-me-downs. General questions must be answered carefully, particularly when the item(s) in question are not present. The answers are rarely straightforward as these general inquiries must be treated as quarks -- the hypothetical values (intrinsic, sentimental, collectible) investigated. An interrogation is necessary in addressing such questions. >>>

Tips: How to Expand Your Product Line
By SIMONA COVEL THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
Most small-business owners dream of going big-of expanding a single product line into a full suite. Indeed, a new product line can put a small company in front of a fresh set of consumers and dramatically increase its reach. But launching a new line is time consuming and expensive. And it could cannibalize existing product sales. Sasha Strauss, managing director at Innovation Protocol, a Los Angeles-based brand consulting company, suggests steps a small business should take to understand its market and prudently launch a new product. Here are a few of his tips. >>>

Amber light for gold, platinum By Jean Temkin August 25, 2008
PRICES are dictated by supply and demand. Until the middle of last week, the value of platinum had dropped to a 10-month low and gold to a nine-month low. Then came a sudden switch from supply to demand for precious metals. The initial reason for the supply situation - rising metals sales - was a falling oil price. As was the case since the beginning of the year until two months ago, precious metals were used as hedges against the oil price. Gold is also used as a hedge against a falling dollar. >>> |

IDEX Online Research: Jewelry Demand in the U.S., It Could Be Worse
By Ken Gassman August 21, 2008
It's been a long six months for jewelers. After a disappointing 2007 holiday selling season, both Valentine's and Mother's Day sales in the first half of 2008 were weak. It's no fun being a jewelry merchant when the economy is weak. However, before we whine and moan too much, it is helpful to see how our industry is performing versus other key retail segments. To get right to the punch line: the U.S. jewelry industry really isn't doing too badly. >>>

Designer creates 'affordable luxury'
By Harold Davis Special Correspondent 08/20/2008
Karen Lee of Greenwich never anticipated that making her own jewelry would turn into a business, but it did. Frustrated with the price of jewelry, she decided to design something on her own. "What happened was I was flipping through a magazine, and I saw a pair earrings that I liked. I wasn't going to spend an exorbitant amount of money on them. I never intended to have a business, but it just happened," said Lee, who started Jewelry by Karen Lee in March of 2006. Lee did some research and consulted with her father, a 50-year veteran of the diamond industry. After making a few pieces for herself, people around town began taking notice of the jewelry she was wearing. >>>

Imagine you're sitting in an office in Israel and you've just been handed a cardboard box with hundreds of loose diamonds worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. No, this isn't a movie starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt. Think like a Businessperson, not a Jeweler JEWELERS OF AMERICA August 18, 2008
Do you think of yourself as a retailer who likes jewelry or as a businessperson who sells jewelry? If you answered the former, then you're in line with the 54.1% of Jewelers of America members who identified themselves this way on the JA 2008 Cost of Doing Business Survey. Just 12% called themselves business people. While the survey doesn't delve into how a retailer's self-proclaimed identity relates to (or hinders) their success, Ken Gassman of the Jewelry Industry Research Institute notes that too many jewelers are in the jewelry business, but not in the business of selling jewelry. In today's highly competitive environment, a retailer has to operate their business on a professional level to succeed. >>>
