Slumping economy threatening sales tax holidays in many states
By JUANITA COUSINS Associated Press Writer 08/12/2008
Thousands of shoppers have been flocking to malls in more than a dozen states for back-to-school sales tax holidays, buying millions of dollars worth of clothes and school supplies - and depriving states of much-needed revenue. The tax holidays offer a financial relief valve to families grappling with high gas and food prices, and are a welcome tradition among retailers. But some lawmakers, economists - and even some shoppers - are questioning why states are suspending sales taxes amid a slumping economy. Several states have called off the event entirely. >>>

The article states that thirty-two percent of respondents are slightly more optimistic, estimating that the "economy growth's during the second half could be between 1 percent and 2 percent." Only eleven percent of economists anticipate that growth will be 2 percent and 3 percent. >>>

Violent S. American Jewel Thieves May Be Hitting Smaller U.S. Cities
By Kari Lydersen August 11, 2008
The FBI is investigating whether a violent, well-organized ring of South American jewelry thieves is expanding its operations away from large metropolitan areas such as New York, Miami, Houston and Chicago and hitting targets in smaller cities in the South. In one incident in Little Rock, diamond merchant Faramarz Hakimian, 48, of New York had just pulled into the parking lot of an upscale strip mall July 29 when two masked men jumped out of a black Chevrolet behind him, smashed his car windows, pulled a gun and told him to lie down on the seat. n one incident in Little Rock, diamond merchant Faramarz Hakimian, 48, of New York had just pulled into the parking lot of an upscale strip mall July 29 when two masked men jumped out of a black Chevrolet behind him, smashed his car windows, pulled a gun and told him to lie down on the seat. >>>

Greenback's strength is deflating gold price
By ANGELA BARNESK August 12, 2008
Given the concern about global inflation, the price of gold should be soaring. Instead, it dropped $36.50 (U.S.) yesterday to $828.30 an ounce, the lowest since Christmas Eve. The latest decline brings the drop since July 18 to a hefty $126.70 or 13.3 per cent. The recovery in the U.S. dollar against major global currencies, including the euro, is weighing on the gold market because bullion is priced in U.S. dollars. The U.S. dollar touched the highest level since Feb. 26 against the euro during trading yesterday before finishing up $1.50 per euro. >>> |
What is the difference between sales and marketing? >By Suze Bragg August 4, 2008
I was having a discussion with an online forum this morning about the role of marketing in a sales organization. Having worked in both marketing and sales, I stated there is a huge difference between the two and they should never be mixed, nor lumped into one description. Every company should market themselves successfully and many don't. Hence the reason sales and sales support have to work so hard. Work the marketing of a company brilliantly and you've conquered 90% of the battle over your competitors. Ignore it--or do it for sales support only--and you have to work 100% harder than necessary. >>>
