'May is Gold Month' returns

Though the rising price of gold has made retailers skittish about sales, "May is Gold Month," a national retail promotion aimed at increasing consumer sales of gold jewelry throughout the month, will be targeting spring shoppers.
Duvall O'Steen, director of jewelry public relations and promotion at the World Gold Council (WGC), says May remains a great time to buy gold for special occasions such as Mother's Day and graduations, or for self-purchase.

Consumer Confidence Index Deteriorates

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, which had declined sharply in March, fell further in April. The Index now stands at 62.3 (1985=100), down from 65.9 in March. The Present Situation Index decreased to 80.7 from 90.6. The Expectations Index was virtually unchanged, 50.1 versus 49.4 in March. >>>

Yellow gold has never completely fallen out of favor with the fashion crowd, but over the past decade the public took more of a shine to sterling silver and platinum. Luxury retailers might be disappointed when tax rebate checks arrive, as only 11 percent of affluent consumers plan to spend them on a shopping spree, a new Unity Marketing survey finds.
The majority of affluent consumers polled plan to either pay down debt with their rebate check (27 percent), save it (26 percent) or invest it (16 percent). >>>

The prospect that a military crackdown in the streets of ruby-rich Myanmar could soon be impacting jewelers on Main Streets here in the United States had industry members taking sides at the Tucson gem shows.Human rights violations by Myanmar's ruling military junta prompted the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives to pass legislation to ban all imported stones from the country (formerly called Burma), closing a U.S. Customs loophole that allows imports of Myanmar gemstones processed elsewhere. >>>
