What's New?

Studies of successful individuals have revealed something that we can all learn from. Over 95% of people respond to change by worrying about the negative fallout the change can inflict upon them. The other 5% react to change by immediately thinking how the change at hand can benefit them. You already know which group the successful folks belong to!

Let's face it, as an independent retail jeweler, the prospect of "inventing" an e-commerce solution for your business on top of all the other initiatives you face can be daunting.

Stop worrying. Take action. Become an affiliate of GemFind.com and embrace the positive opportunity that the internet offers. We have solutions to your e-commerce worries and even more importantly-to your peace of mind.

After four successful years in New York, expectations were high for the Women's Jewelry Association's first "Women in the Know" West Coast Conference on Sept. 8 in Anaheim, Calif., at the Anaheim Marriot Hotel.

More than one hundred jewelry professionals from around the country and representing all facets of the industry attended the full-day event. And expectations were met-if not exceeded. Story

Know-How

By Shanu Singh Gulianion September 11, 2007

I decided going with a contract jeweler would be the best choice for now. I wouldn't have to pay him/her hourly, but instead per job and he/she would come in only a few times a week and finish all the jobs.

I did find a very good jeweler who works for another local chain-he works there as a contract jeweler too. What I mean by contract jeweler is that:

1- He has his own insurance.

2- I don't dictate his hours but he didn't say no to the hours I requested either.

3- He's paid per piece and not by the hour so I don't have to worry about him sitting around with nothing to do. More

Diamonds Wear Coats of Many Colors

To meet the growing demand for low-priced colored diamonds, technology has come up with a new version of an old trick:
coating the diamond to change its color.

Intensely colored diamonds, called fancies, are extremely rare in nature and very expensive. The gem industry has overcome these limitations in recent years by developing ways to produce colored diamonds at a comparatively low cost.

In earlier issues we've discussed some of these technologies. Colored diamonds can be synthesized in a lab. Or, poorly colored natural diamonds, yellowish or brownish stones, can be turned to vivid colors through irradiation and  HPHT (high pressure high temperature). Or, the diamond can be coated.

Diamond sales jump to Internet

By Kristine Hoffman  9/14/2007

In 2006, Internet diamond and jewelry sales reached $2.5 billion, an increase of 20 percent from 2005. Today, the online jewelry business represents 4 percent of total jewelry sales, according to data from IDEX online research, and that number is expected to increase to 7 percent by 2010.

At McGivern Jewelers in Perrysburg, online jewelry sales represent 95 percent of their business. Owner Michael McGivern said, "Our business is almost double what it was last year, due to the overall growth in the diamond Internet business. Ten years ago, who would have thought that? Let's put it this way: I am glad we do not have to rely on the walk-in retail business as our bread and butter." Read On

Red, White and Blue, American Watch Companies

In today's watch world, the most successful and famous companies are Swiss. However, there is a strong contingent of companies in the United States keeping the American watchmaking tradition alive.

A little known fact about watch oceanutproduction is that without the American influence, the worldwide watch industry would be nothing like it is today. American companies like Hamilton, Elgin, and others introduced industrialization and transformed the industry. To get a snapshot of the American watch industry, I turned to the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC), since they had just conducted an exhibition on American Watchmaking at the Association's excellent museum in Columbia, More
