Emerald Magnate Shot Colombian newspaper El Tiempo reported that unknown assailants shot the emerald magnate Yesid Nieto a few days ago. The news was only made public March 2. Though Nieto reportedly survived the attack at his Bogota apartment, he is said to remain in a coma. Sources close to Nieto indicate his prognosis remains guarded. More |

POLICE OFFICER KILLED CHASING JEWELRY STORE ROBBER
New Hartford, NY – February 27, 2006
At 8:30 p.m. two male suspects robbed a retail jewelry store. Police officers quickly arrived on the scene and pursued the suspects' car. The suspects' car raced away and eventually crashed into a gas pump at a convenience store five miles away, setting the gas tank on fire. One suspect then ran into the woods, and as a police officer from the New Hartford, NY Police Department was chasing the suspect, the officer was shot and killed. The suspect who fled into the woods escaped, and the other suspect was arrested at the crash scene.
