Penguin, Panda and Zebra: Oh, My!

Written by Alex | May 22, 2013

Yowza. There are lots of updates coming to Google! Our GemFind Twitter Feed has been popping up with all sorta of animal-related algorithm mentions. Also, stay tuned for a follow up post regarding an incredible new search tool, expected to advance the medical field (and RIVAL GOOGLE).

So, about... Google Penguin, Google Panda and

Google Zebra

"Now how fancy is that? I’ve came recently across multiple “codenames” for the upcoming Google Algorithm updates. The latest is Panda 2.0 but the one that cought my attention was “Zebra”. I think I will adopt this since somebody already mentioned it.

You might ask: “Wait a minute? What are Penguin, Panda and Zebra?”

To start up I should explain about the SEO before updates to search engines. When I created my first html framy website it didn’t take more than adding meta keywords into the code. To get on top of first Search Engine Result Page (SERP) all I had to do was to optimise my page, put some keywords into content, alt tags, etc.

But the volume of pages kept rising so Google introduced PageRank. PageRank is a measue of a website relevancy by calculating number of so called backlinks or inbound links (links from other websites that are pointing to your website). But the developers took it onto the Dark Side of SEO Power and the dedicated software was building the Internet presence of thousends of companies. Anyway the Standard Google User was bombed with tones of irrelevant information.

That’s why Google decided to revise their algorithms.

Every search engine’s (and Google especially) prime goal is to provide the most comprehensive answer to an user in the quickest time possible. Google wants people to find what they are looking for and that is the way Google makes money.

So some time around February 2011 Google implemented so called Panda update – a huge huge update that targeted low quality weak sites that achieved high ranks in Google search due to a massive links buildup. Well, no pain no gain… Some of genuine websites that were spending loads of resources on their genuine campaigns were targeted as well sort of a collateral damage. Or actually they became the casulties of war. Name it what you like.

So from then the PageRank and backlinks are less important for the overall page position. Yet they still counts! If you’d ask me how to build credible backlinks, I can answer you in a next post.

Next, around April 2012 Penguin arrived. This was another hit to the Dark Siders of SEO Power. Things like keyword stuffing, weak content, overusing anchor tags and text, misusing of meta keywords and meta descriptions, using hidden content, etc.

And now this “Zebra” update. It is said that it’s going to arrive in the Summer time or early Autumn. It is said that it’s going to focus on low quality e-commerce sites.

So what is the best way for SEO to not make harm? To my mind it pure and simple – keep up with Jedi! Be genuine, be credible, be yourself. Create websites that are both SEO-friendly and user-optimised. Keep the nice balance between that. Remember – being easy to find in the Internet doesn’t mean that you will convert."

5 Tips to Protect your Blog from the Panda Penguin Update:

How To Protect Websites / Blogs From Google Penguin & Google Panda Updates:

1-     Get Backlinks, But Not Too Much

The most common reason of getting penalized by search engine is excessive amount of link backs from different websites. Back links are good, but only if they come in natural way and in a limit. Before going to launch any back link campaign for your web project, you must think twice. Building couple of link backs to your web pages is not a feat, but maintaining a incoming links from websites on daily purpose is a feat.

2-     Keep Maintain The Reader Interest

I must say, it is one of the most difficult processes. You have to do deep study of the topics you are covering, you have to go wider with relevant components. If you are writing an article about anything, you must add few attracting images (please don’t add hot chick images, because there are lot of things to be added into articles).  The reader interest in your content will definitely increase your page views, and as well as on page time, will decrease the bounce rate. So, you can easily avoid many down points in view of search engine. (The lesser bounce rate will help you in evading the Google’s Panda penalization, and will also help you in making good appearance in front of other search algorithms.)

3-     Get Into Details With Your Content

Don’t try to trick both readers and search engines, because both are very intelligent and can react to you every single mistake. I have seen many bloggers post thin content on their websites, or avoid getting into the details, and then use their SEO skills to over their competitors, so I say, if you are also trying to do the same. Simply stop your act, or you will be penalized by the search algorithms like Google Panda and Google Penguin.  “Google Panda will kick your website because of thin content, and Google Penguin kills you website because of tricking searching algorithms with over optimizing your content.”

4-     Become A Social Rock Star

Social appearance is one of the most important factor these days in ranking up in the SERP’s. Recently Google had both Twitter & it’s own Google+ in the search results, and in many statements Google directly stated social ranking is more important now than any kind of SEO or press releases about your products. I have already discussed the Social influence, and the requirement of branding owns self in a recent post. You must check it out to get more tips.

5-     Don’t Completely Ignore SEO, Do On-Page SEO:

Since the Google has rolled out new algorithms into his search engine results, many media outlets have totally decided to end up their SEO activities, and actively transferred their business from Search Engines into Social networking and bookmarking. Thanks to number of social bookmarking and networking websites, many big brands are now engaged with their readers and customers to bring more things on their charts. But that’s only one side of the coin, the other side, Google also want you to do at least on-page SEO of your website. The non proper On-Page SEO can also cause you trouble for your web projects, the improper user of Header tags in the content.

Google Panda Becomes Permanent SEO News

In the world of website marketing, we watch the Google Panda.

The Google Panda is more than just an algorithm from the world’s largest search engine. It’s a living, breathing entity that uses his (admittedly cute) furry arms to create firm parameters on how websites should work. But although he can seem a bit pushy at first, he’s remarkably easy to work with once you get to know him.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is becoming more and more of a give-and-take relationship between search engines, users and designers. The Panda’s ultimate goal (and he’s made no real secret of this) is that the Internet be a rich, stimulating, information-filled environment. He’s a hands-off kind of boss for the most part, but although he’s maybe a little on the pudgy side, the Google Panda still casts a very long shadow.

SEO News…and News…And More News

Frustratingly, it seems like every time you turn around there’s another SEO update from Google. They seem to be about as common as summer hailstorms in Calgary. Since first lumbering onto the scene in February, 2011 Google Panda has been revised 24 times. In March, 2013 Google finally reported what they promise to be their very last manual update, which means website marketers can begin to breathe a sigh of relief. If your traffic hasn’t crashed, you’re doing just fine, and can continue on developing the way you have been. If your traffic HAS crashed, however, and not made its way back to previous rankings, maybe it's time to double-check that your website doesn’t include any of the major Panda no-nos.

The Google Panda Doesn’t Like:

Content for Content’s Sake. The Panda doesn’t appreciate the disingenuous. Websites that don’t supply valuable information through careful content development are penalized for their obvious inability to participate in the Internet culture. The Panda looks for websites that are good sharers. In reality, today’s content developers and the Panda get along just fine. Using keywords has become less of a pain and more of a way to simply let Google know what content they can expect to find on your page and what you’re optimizing for. In turn, Google lets writers know about what people are finding interesting that maybe they hadn’t thought of. Don’t cheat…the Panda can tell, and punishes through lower results."
