IDEX Online Research: U.S. jewelry biz hits $65Bof the Diamond District

By Ken Gassman for IDEX Online             National Jeweler                      August 22, 2011

New government data has boosted the size of the U.S. jewelry industry by about 5 percent, restoring it to its former level of $65 billion in the peak sales year of 2007. In the heady pre-recession years earlier in the past decade, the U.S. Department of Commerce made only minor revisions to its annual jewelry industry sales estimates. >>>

By ABC Digital Unit                          abc NEWS                              Aug.23, 2011

In today's swerving economy, stocks are out, and gold is in. The price of gold is up 20 percent since the beginning of 2011, and by mid-August gold was going for over $1,700 per ounce. At times on Monday, its spot price hovered near $1,900 per ounce. So how do you cash in? >>>

The adjustment question

By Michelle Graff                              National Jeweler                             Aug.19, 2011

During its recent conference call, the chief executive officer of Blue Nile said something that many jewelers never thought they'd hear.

The price of diamonds, which the online retailer buys on a real-time basis, had increased so sharply that it cost Blue Nile engagement ring sales. The website that, much to the chagrin of brick-and-mortar retailers, has attracted hordes of young bridal buyers looking for the best price on their diamond engagement ring suddenly wasn't the best deal on the block anymore. >>>

Make money from your repairs        &
nbsp;

By David Brown                           Southern Jewelry News

Repairs often suffer as the ugly sister of many jewelry businesses. Compared to the more glamorous gold and silver departments, many stores leave repairs to take care of themselves. Yet your repair business can be one of the most lucrative areas in any store, and provide you with a consistency of profit that is the envy of other items. >>>

Diamonds from Candle Light

By Stonechicky                    The Israeli Diamond Industry Blog                 Aug 22, 2011

It used to be that the only way adiamond could be created was through almost immeasurable force exerted by geological processes over millions or billions of years. Then humans got smart enough to create synthetic - or lab-grown - diamonds, an undertaking that is even starting to become profitable as the techniques are refined. >>>

How Worried Should We Be?

By Rob Bates                                 JCK  .                           Aug.19, 2011

Businesspeople hate uncertainty. And that is what we are dealing with right now. We could be on the verge of something very bad, reminiscent of 2008 and 2009. Or we could just be seeing a bump in the road. No one knows for sure. But, at this point, most of the retailers I spoke to say they haven't noticed any dip in spending in the last few weeks, despite the very mixed economic news. >>>

Watch Out for Office Supply Scams

By Shari Waters                          About.com Guide                            Aug.18, 2011

We lease our credit card terminal from our bank and receive all of our ribbon and paper at no additional charge as it's part of the lease agreement. We just call them and they send it right out to us. That's why I was stunned the first time I received a call from "customer service" to let us know they had our "order" ready. When asked where the person was calling from, she gave a vague name like "merchant services". >>>

Managing the Customer Service Revolution

By Zack UrlockerJ                        E-Commerce Times                            Aug 22, 2011

During the past few years, customer service organizations have faced increasing amounts of pressure to deliver better service over a broader range of channels including the Web, email and phone. By Rob Bates                                    JCK                             Aug.19,2011

With the Swiss franc now hitting record levels against the dollar,

Uncertainty biggest challenge to business

National Jeweler                                             Aug. 22, 2011

A new survey shows that the biggest challenge to small business owners today is not being sure about where the economy is headed, not necessarily the problems in the economy itself. In conducting its 2011 U.S. Bank Small Business Annual Survey, U.S. Bancorp asked small business owners what the biggest challenge facing their business is, and nearly three in 10 (27 percent) of survey-takers said economic uncertainty.>>>
