The 'Discretionary' Dilemma

By Michelle Graff                          National Jeweler                    May 10, 2010

There is no question that diamonds that do not come in the form of an engagement ring or wedding band have been a tough sell during this recession, as cash-strapped consumers turned away from discretionary purchases to shore up their savings, or simply make their mortgage payments. >>>

I am flattered that National Jeweler asked me to predict the most influential trends impacting the U.S. jewelry industry in 2010, relieved that I was able to do so after the first 90 days of the year and pleased to have tapped into the opinions of a number of insightful jewelry industry colleagues and friends. >>>

By Roe Kalb                      The Israeli Diamond Industry Blog         May 06,2010

A recent raid by Mexican soldiers on a safe house believed to belong to the Valencia gang, allies of Mexico's notorious Sinaloa drug cartel, reaffirmed a well known fact - gangsters are living it up with style, even when it comes to their favorite weapons. During the raid, the soldiers seized an arsenal of gold-plated and diamond-encrusted weapons, including 31 go
ld and silver-plated hand guns with diamond-inlaid grips >>>

How To Choose a Prong Setting

By Carly Wickell,                                About.com Guide

The prong setting, sometimes called a claw setting, is the most commonly used gemstone setting and is especially popular for solitaire engagement rings. You've seen prong settings. The diamond or other gem is inserted into three or more metal prongs that form a basket-like base then the ends of the prongs are bent over and shaped so that they rest against the crown, just past the stone's girdle, holding it snugly in place. >>>

AGL: New treated rubies differ from composites

National Jeweler                                                                     May 04, 2010

New York--The American Gemological Laboratories (AGL) is alerting the trade to its studies on a new ruby treatment that combines fissure healing and in-filling to improve the stone's appearance, but that is distinct from the type of treatment that "composite rubies" undergo. According to a press release from AGL, this new ruby treatment--which provides a low-cost alternative to more traditionally heated rubies--has been detected in stones, mostly from Mozambique >>>

Why Flash Sales Are No Flash in the Pan
By Rob Bates                         JCK Magazine                          May 04, 2010

There's a red-velvet-ropelike air of exclusivity around so-called "flash" Web sites that sell discounted name-brand merchandise for a limited time. One must be invited to join (though invitations aren't hard to get); only members can purchase their heavily discounted offerings, including jewelry from leading designers; and they don't show up on comparison shopping tools like Froogle. Executives liken them to sample sales, which offer great deals for a short time, typically 24 to 48 hours. >>>
