By Suzanne DeVries  National Jeweler,  July 21, 2008

Service takes on an even bigger role in a difficult economy. It is not enough to offer low prices when millions of retailers are already seeking new business through sales gimmicks and deep discounts. In this buyer's market, the jeweler offering superior service, the one distinguished for providing the best overall "perceived value," can woo even the most loyal clients from competitors. Know - How

Platinum loses its shine

By Brendan Ryan   July 19, 2008

PLATINUM shares stabilised on the JSE today after taking a pounding at the end of last week as the platinum price dropped sharply and analysts turned negative on the short-term outlook for the metal.
The turnaround in sentiment has been dramatic given the prevailing attitude towards the metal over the past two years that nothing could derail platinum's prospects.Read On

Faking it at online auctions

Tucked away in the depths of jewelry boxes are broken chains, class rings and old trinkets from boyfriends past. Such jewelry, as well as gold coins, dental gold and the like can translate to cash for those looking for some extra money. Read On

Doris Payne, 77, made a career out of stealing gems
By DEEDEE CORRELL Los Angeles Times , July 19, 2008

Doris Payne never carried a gun. She never smashed a window or broke into a safe to take what she wanted. She just crossed her pantyhosed legs and murmured about the filigree ring under the glass. She wondered aloud about matching earrings. She would promise to return in 45 minutes, and only after Payne wafted away in her flowered dress would the clerk count the rings and come up short.
