Family assets to be seized in Fabrikant case

New York-A bankruptcy judge has authorized U.S. marshals to take all necessary steps to seize the assets of the ex-owners of M. Fabrikant and Sons, including, if need be, busting into their apartments on Fifth Avenue and Park Avenue in Manhattan.
The order was issued on June 18 in response to a complaint filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York last week by the "shared assets trust," consisting of Fabrikant lenders and creditors. >>>

Gold: Don't count on $1,000

Gold BarsNEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Don't look now but the price of gold is back above $900 an ounce.
Gold, which typically rises during times of economic uncertainty and inflation, hit an all-time high of more than $1,030 an ounce back in mid-March.
The price started to slip soon after that as credit crunch fears subsided. But it has been back on the rise this week partly due to the dollar's weakness and stubbornly high oil prices.

Jewelry Web Traffic Rose 9% from April to May

WebRAPAPORT...  comScore Inc. reported an increase in online activity between April and May, which was driven by Mother's Day, and gave the jewelry and luxury goods sector a boost in visitors.
Content categories showing gains in traffic from April to May included a 15 percent jump in visitors to floral related websites; an 11 percent jump in coupon gifts sites; and a 9 percent increase in jewelry / luxury goods websites.

Forbes yesterday reported that Diane Irvine, CEO of online jeweler Blue Nile (nasdaq: NILE), said at a conference in Chicago on Wednesday that the company is focusing on expansion into the international market, particularly Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. International sales for Blue Nile were up 112.5% to $17.0 million in 2007 over the year prior. "Over the long-term, we believe international will be half or more of our total business," Irvine said. >>>

Hong Kong Show Opens with Record No. of Exhibitors

The Hong Kong Jewellery & Watch Fair opened yesterday with a record 1,290 exhibitors. The show expanded floor space to accommodate more than 2,300 booths. "The purchasing power of Asian buyers is getting stronger in recent years owing to the economic growth in some Asian countries such as China and India," said Celine Lau, director of jewellery fairs at CMP Asia Ltd. >>>

N.J. jewelers blindsided by used-jewelry bill

Newark, N.J.-New Jersey jewelers are scrambling to have their voices heard by state lawmakers after belatedly learning of pending legislation that would require retail jewelers to maintain detailed records and photos of all jewelry they buy from consumers.Introduced on May 12 and slated for a vote as early as today, New Jersey State Assembly Bill A 2712 was designed to make it harder for criminals to fence stolen jewelry.
