Jewelry Stores Make Strong Comeback in 2006

Unity Marketing Oct.01. 2007

In 2006 jewelry consumers' taste turned more upscale, and this was good news for specialty jewelry stores. After losing market share for several years to discounters and other more mass-market retailers, jewelry stores regained a full 50 percent share of the $62 billion jewelry and watch market. This is according to the "Jewelry and Watch Report, 2007," the newest report from Unity Marketing. Read On

In Overdrive to $1,000 Gold

MONDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2007

Interview with John Hathaway, Senior Managing Director,

Portfolio Manager, Toqueville Asset Management
By SANDRA WARD

Barron's: Is gold finally getting some respect?

Hathaway: There is a lot more interest, but I am not sure respect. It is still a marginal space for most investors.

What's driven the price to nearly a 30-year high?

It's associated with the liquidity squeeze and the
Fed rate cuts. I was in Ireland recently, and the papers were full of
news on Northern Rock, the big mortgage provider in the U.K. that
essentially had a bank run. To some extent, injections of liquidity
make currencies, whether the pound or euro or dollar, suspect. One
obvious response is to go to gold. More

Marie Antoinette's pearls to fetch more than $700,000
National Jeweler; September 28, 2007

London-By now, the much-maligned "Let them eat cake" phrase, attributed
to Marie Antoinette's treatment of the poor, has been ruled out as
nothing more than a fable.

That's not to say, however, that the most-famed queen
of France's legacy of extreme extravagance is at all false. Marie
Antoinette continues to be remembered for the exorbitant amount of
money she spent on everything from clothing to jewels.

Auction house Christie's is now offering a part of
that legacy to the public. In its upcoming "Magnificent Jewellery"
sale, to be held on Dec. 12, Christie's is offering a historically
important natural-pearl, diamond and ruby necklace, the pearls of which
belonged to Marie Antoinette.

Shell Shock: China's Pearl Trade Faces Crisis
By David Federman, Colored Stone Editor-in-Chief September 25, 2007

Forget lead paint on toys. Forget poisons in pet food. China has got water problems so severe the government is pondering wide bans on its major aquaculture industries, including fish and pearl farming. "Thirst comes first," says a West Coast pearl dealer returning from a recent buying trip to Hong Kong. Story

White Gold or Platinum
Posted by Jewelry News at September 30

White gold is a wildly popular metal for use in all sorts of jewelry, and makes a stylish choice for wedding rings, engagement rings and eternity rings. Yet, if you have ever seen a solid gold bar, you probably noticed that pure gold has a vibrant, deep yellowish-orange tint. So where does white gold come from? Actually, there is no such thing as white gold! Gold in its purest form is exactly the color the name suggests-gold. Read On

Sell The Bigwig

David Richardson, Instore Magazine

IT'S BEEN A pretty slow day in the store and, with the exception of a couple of small sales and a repair, you really haven't seen too many customers. All of a sudden who walks in the door but the president of the biggest company in town.

Suddenly a shot of adrenaline explodes through your body like a thunderbolt in a rainstorm. You are nervous, and you know that anxiety will probably prevail as you begin your conversation with the customer.
