Zale same-store sales edge up in 1Q National Jeweler NOVEMBER 03, 2006 - Same-store sales increased 0.4 percent at Zale Corp. for the first quarter ended Oct. 31. The company attributed the slightly lower than expected same-store sales increase to clearance at the Zales brand, which saw more transactions but lower tickets. More |

Study: Luxury consumer confidence up, spending down National Jeweler NOVEMBER 02, 2006 - Stevens, Pa. -- Luxury consumer confidence increased 4.1 points in the third quarter to 103.3 on the Luxury Consumption Index, tracked by Unity Marketing, but luxury spending for the period decreased. "The rebound of the luxury index to 103.3 points means that luxury consumers have more confidence about the economy and their financial status," Unity Marketing President Pam Danziger said in a statement. "In particular, there is a notable rise in luxury consumers' perception of the financial health of the country." Luxury consumers spent at average of $13,432 on luxuries in the third quarter, a 9.6 percent drop from spending in the second quarter. Fashion accessories remained among the few categories where luxury spending did not lessen in the quarter. Spending by super-affluent consumers—those with incomes of $150,000 or more—dropped the most. The Unity Marketing Luxury Consumer Tracking Study surveyed 1,048 luxury consumers with an average income of $149,100 and an average age of 43. |

BURLGARS FLEE IN TWO BMWs Lexington, SC and Irmo, SC - Oct. 29, 30, 2006 At 4:00 a.m. on 10/30 six suspects broke into a retail jewelry store in Lexington and smashed showcases with hammers, taking jewelry merchandise. The same suspects are believed to have committed a similar incident in Irmo at 5:30 a.m. on 10/29 at another jewelry store. The suspects were only in each store for just a few minutes and fled in two BMWs, 500 Series, one dark, the second white with a sun roof. In the Irmo incident, there may have been seven occupants of the two cars and one of the suspects was armed. More

These suspects use distraction to get into showcases in retail jewelry stores, and on May 5, 2006 they used unattended keys to open a showcase at a store in West Des Moines, Iowa . They have been active in Ohio, Maryland, New Jersey and other East Coast states. Arrest warrants are outstanding in CT, CA, NV and IA.
