AGTA president takes leave due to major robbery By Teresa Novellino - National Jeweler JULY 18, 2006 - Dallas -- American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) President Rick Krementz says he will be taking a three-month leave of absence from that position, effective July 17, to take care of business issues at his company in the wake of a "major robbery." Krementz said that a salesman at his company, Richard Krementz Gemstones, based in Newark, N.J., was robbed by four members of what authorities believe was one of the South American gangs that target traveling salespeople in the jewelry industry. The incident, which occurred in late June in Amarillo, Texas, resulted in minor injuries to the salesman and the loss of more than one million dollars worth of jewelry, Krementz said. "We think it might have been done with a GPS tracker," Krementz said, adding that the devices can track vehicles for up to seven days after placement. "It really terrifies me." The FBI is assisting with the investigation, Krementz said. Meanwhile, Krementz said he will spend time working on security issues to make sure that such an incident doesn't happen again, he said. The most difficult aspect of the theft is not the monetary costs, but replacing the pieces, which took a long time to create, said Krementz, whose company is known for its top-quality colored gemstone jewelry made of rare gemstones. Krementz said he though taking the time off from his duties at AGTA would be best in light of the circumstances. As per AGTA's constitution, Barbara Lawrence, AGTA's vice president, will assume the office of president until Krementz's anticipated return on Oct. 1, 2006. |

Retail Sales Fall in June Professional Jeweler Retail sales fell unexpectedly in June, the first decline in four months, suggesting the beginning of a possible slowdown in the growth of consumer spending. Sales fell 0.1% between May and June. They rose only 5.9% compared to sales in June 2005, the slowest year-over-year growth in 2006, according to Investor's Business Daily. In addition, mass retailers reported a slowdown in sales growth during June. Wal-Mart reported a 1.2% rise in same-store sales for the month. And the University of Michicgan announced its consumer sentiment index fel 1.9 points to 83 last week, showing additional signs of consumer hesitation. Economists blame high gas prices, climbing interest rates, a slowdown in the housing market and slower job growth as factor's in consumers' trepidation. |

Companies increasingly are placing a high priority on database marketing initiatives. According to the report "In Search of a Single Version of Truth: Strategies for Consolidating Analytic Silos," released by The Data Warehousing Institute (TDWI) last summer, consolidation continues to remain a top project for businesses. Driving this urge to merge is the "need for consistent data across the enterprise," as noted by 90 percent of the respondents to TDWI's survey. Respondents also reported that only about one-third of all the data structures in their enterprise were consolidated. More Key Retail Reports, Sales, Surveys, Studies and News More

Modern Lockets A sentimental favorite of proud mothers of all generations, these lovely lockets can be petite and traditional or modernly bold. by Nanz Aalund, June 2006 - Ganoskin Before photography, lockets were decorated with miniature, handpainted portraits -- a luxury few could afford. The advent of affordable photographic miniatures propelled the locket to the forefront of jewelry fashion during the sentimental Victorian era. Between 1890 and 1920, ornately crafted lockets were suspended from bracelets, necklaces, brooches, belts, and chatelaines. Ladies of fashion were not seen without one, and men wore them on their watch chains. During World War I, many soldiers wore lockets into battle as a reminder of loved ones at home.
